High Speed Internet Providers

How to Find the Best High Speed Internet Provider
Written by Tom FRIEDMAN
Finding a good Internet provider may be a difficult task. If you need a provider for a DSL connection for your home it is simple, if you are looking for a cable Internet connection for your business then you will have to do some thorough research. There are always a few things you need to look for in a provider before making a final decision.

Where to Start

There are two options for you at hand; the first option is your local ISP. You can find plenty of ISP in every city; some of them are telephone companies that offer DSL connection. Others are cable TV companies that offer cable Internet with different packages. Then there are also the private companies that provide wireless connections and of course expensive satellite connections which are sometimes used for business.

The second option is Internet, like there are websites that compare car quotes, mortgage rates etc.; there are also a few websites that compare Internet providers that offer their services in certain regions and countries. These websites compare different aspects of the services of these providers like in example their price, contract length, different packages, download and upload speed, customer support and other things like hosting and mail accounts.

These are the options at hand and you can go for one of those options or you can use both, which I would recommend. In order to find the best provider you first need to have a choice of providers, so the more providers that are available the bigger your chances of finding a good provider.

What to Look For In a Provider

Depending on what you will use the connection for, your choice can be simple or hard. If you are an average user that just wants speed when surfing and downloading, the best option would be DSL. DSL normally allows you to download quite fast but the uploading is a bit slower. If you only use the Internet to browse the Internet, watch movies and listen to music, you do not have to worry about the slower upload speed. The only thing you need to check with DSL providers are the contract prices, length and the speed. If you are satisfied with their speed, you must make sure that the price is something you can afford and that the contract is not too long.

If you are starting a business and you want to connect several computers that all have a high speed Internet connection on a network you might want to go with DSL or Cable. DSL is at a disadvantage here because it offers low upload speeds, and most companies that do business on the Internet need solid upstream speed. So if that is your problem reserving a cable Internet area with a provider might solve your problems. You need to know that not every provider can make that happen, nor do they have the capacity to do that. The number of those who can is limited and they will only do that for bigger companies. If you do manage to get a separate cable landline you need to be sure of the connection quality: speed, upstream and downstream and the price. The price of cable Internet can be very expensive compared to DSL.

You need to look for a professional firm that knows what they are doing. Here are some of the examples of a good Internet service provider:
  • Brand (Some companies are so good and so renowned that they have become a popular brand which is always a sign of stability and growth.)
  • Technical support and security (A good company needs to have 24/7 support. Their security needs to be high; if you plan to start a business a security plan with your provider is necessary.)
  • Ability to expand (Greater companies will always have the option to expand speed, number of connections etc.)
What it comes down to is quality. In the end it only depends on your needs, but paying a bit more to have a secure static IP may be the best option. Considering that a low cost and sometimes low speed that come with dynamic IP’s may have their downside. You surely don’t wish to be banned from a provider’s network because they can’t recognize your computer due to a constantly changing IP. The three mentioned examples are the key aspects of a good provider. Keeping all that in mind, plus the fact that there are many providers out there, anybody can find the right provider.

What makes a good provider, where to start looking and what to look for if you are looking for a home Internet connection or for your business.
