Internet providers or Internet service providers (ISP) are companies that provide access to the Internet. Depending on the provider, they may offer connections from dial-up, DSL to cable connection. Most people that connect to the Internet from home have either these three types of connection or wireless, satellite or IDSN. Companies on the other hand that have business types of connection usually use DSL, SHDSL and Ethernet technology for connecting to the Internet.
Almost every provider has different options and different services to provide, and depending on the type of connection you want and money you are willing to pay, some providers might suit you better than others. Let’s take a look what a solid provider offers. What does a Good Provider Offers?Since we are talking about high speed Internet providers we are going to concentrate on higher speed connections like DSL, wireless, cable etc… Just think about it, dial-up connections are a thing of the past. There isn’t a single website anymore that can be viewed properly via dial-up. What I am trying to say is that dial-up has maximum 56kb/s, which is useless these days. So if you come across an Internet provider that still offers dial-up please ignore any offer they make since dial-up simply can’t provide you with high speed Internet. A good Internet provider offers exactly what we are talking about, high speeds, high speed Internet at a reasonable price that is. Personal preferences should make be the deciding factor when you eventually choose a provider but how will you know whether a provider is any good? Before you choose a provider you need to check the contract. A good provider will offer you a normal contract that doesn’t bind you for years and years. If they have good service they know that you will be back, so they will make a contract with you for a year or two. If you see the contract lasts for more than 3 years, go someplace else. Let’s talk more about the speed. While the package you plan to take may be a 6mb/s DSL connection which sounds great, you need to check the fine print. Even though a good provider won’t hide anything from you, you need to make sure that the package you are getting has a good download as well as upload speed. Many providers will place restrictions on one of those two or on both. They might either place a cap to the maximum amount of GB you can download in a certain time period or they will restrict the maximum speed of your download. The providers also often state that the upload speed might not be as good as the download speed. Another thing a good provider needs is the ability to support the growth of any network you might have in mind. If you are using your connection from home that might not be necessary, but if you are purchasing a connection for your business you might need to expand in the future. So a good provider needs to have the capacity to follow the client’s needs. Not just the capacity but also a technical staff that knows the job. That leads us to the most important aspect of a good provider, the trust. A good provider isn’t just a company that will hook you up with a high speed Internet connection. A good provider is a company that has developed trust over years with quality services and great technical support. Like any other professional company they should be able to deal with any situation that presents itself. So sometimes you might want to pay more just to be safe. A good company is a company that has been around for a few years and has a name. That sort of company probably won't be the cheapest but sometimes the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ is 100% true. The first thing you need to think of when you are looking for a provider is the type of Internet you want. If you want DSL you need to check the restrictions if any but if you want cable or wireless then there is more to it. With those two types of connections you can get faster download and upload speeds than with DSL but as soon as someone else connects your speed will fall. Now the difference between a good and a bad provider can make a big difference since the good providers will never make the network overcrowded. A good provider will put a restriction on how many users can connect on a single line. That way they will make sure your speed doesn’t go on a dial-up level and they will still ensure you have a high speed Internet. While a bad provider will use one line connection to place as many users as they can. A good provider offers speed, service, knowledge and trust. There are many providers out there, but with these few things in mind it will be easy to spot a good provider and even easier to spot a bad one. What an Internet service provider is and what does a good Internet provider offer, what are the characteristics of a good provider. |
